How's this for a sprint finish?
Monday, May 17, 2010 at 11:05AM I was reminded of this rather amazing piece of footage at the dinner dance by Libby. Inspirational, horrifying and mightily comical in equal parts, this is the end of the 1997 World Ironman Triathlon championships in Hawaii. Sian Welch and Windy Ingram after swimming 2.4 miles, cycling 112 miles and finally putting in a marathon, are probably entitled to feel a little bit wobbly. I'm not sure I've seen two people so clearly locked in mortal combat during an endurance event. Fair play to 'em - they earned their slap up nosh in the post event sports village (After Ironman Switzerland I shunned the spaghetti bolognaise and bran muffins in favour of a king size Bratwurst and half a litre of lager outside. It was far more fitting for a Les Croups triathlete).
As Andrew Sedgemond, Denis Murphy, Julie Scholey and I will vouch, the finish line at an Ironman is a highly welcome sight. Fortunately, none of us had to duke it out on all fours in front of the sporting media.
Please note - this in NO WAYrepresents the end of a Llandow Duathlon. A mere 1 hour or so of exercise, followed by the welcome sight of the campervan and a bunch of friendly faces, it is quite unlikely that you will be video'd crawling across the line and uploaded to Youtube for all to see (and it's cheap, local, safe and with wonderful sea views).
