Our club house is right on the “Taff Trail” and we take full advantage as long as daylight permits.
Most of us stick to a regular route, as this cuts debate down to the question “Short or long?” The difference is an extra bit in the middle, of over 2 miles, which turns a long 7 into a short 10.
Our routes go anti-clockwise, or if you prefer, they turn left more often than they turn right. We head away from town, along the right bank of the river, staying with the cycle path through Haley Park all the way up to the canal.
Most of this stage is concrete path, and quite hard underfoot, if not absolutely smooth. It’s also popular with cyclists of every level, and dogs of all sizes.
The route develops into proper ‘off road’ at the canal, which is largely bike free. It’s a major hangout for flies, however, which is why runners often wear posey sunglasses these days.
The canal is less then a mile long, after which the run crosses a road, and joins the cycle path again.
The long runs splits off here and trundles off for a lap through Tongwynlais, up to Castell Coch, before doubling back
Both routes return along the cycle path, going down river back into Cardiff. We cross the river at Radyr station footbridge, and go off road again through Radyr woods (the only climb on the short route), before eventually catching sight of the Taff again at Llandaff.
The whole thing. (Not very clear I’m afraid.)

As you can probably tell, I learned as I was going along. That’s why the text is more readable after the fourth map. As much of the footpaths aren’t marked, this was a lot harder than I expected. The distance was measured as 7.13 miles, which is probably a bit short.
The font, should anybody care, is called an Apple font called “Textile” and I think it’s rather good.
