June
- Bourton-on-the-Water 15 Miles. Croups look like this: David Carter 1-46-23 (33rd); Matthew Townsend 1-46-48 (35th); Glenda Edwards 1-52-35 (53rd and 2nd over 35).
- Celtic Manor Chairman's Challenge 10k. Sandy Johnston, Dave Bright, Des Davies, Graeme Donovan, and Geoff Wright ran for us, though I thought Mike Murphy was still a member. (28k .pdf file.)
- Welsh Veterans Track & Field Championships, Cardiff. Clare Johnson took silver in the FV55 5000m, while Alan Mann was 5th in the M40 cat of the same race. (Plain HTML version.)
- Pembroke Triathlon. Geran Hughes pipped David Price (ret'd) to 73rd place. Dave says he was outsprinted because he didn't know where the finish was, while Geran says that Dave won really, because he was so far ahead for most of the race. How sweet. Errol Alexis wasn't that far behind, in 148th place, and Sue Stephens was on his tail in 154th. But a long, long way in front were two over-fifty-year-olds: Paul Belcher (probably a lapsed member), 26th, and Jerry Cleal-Harding, 41st.
- SSAFA 5k. The second in the series, not as fast as the first, but a bigger turnout.
- Potteries Marathon. Gil John, one of the Barry hard crew, got round in 4:12.
- Rose Inn 4M. How we did in the second race.
- Welsh Castles Relay. We have stage winners and team results, and overall standings. Detailed results are now available.
- Pegasus Wenvoe 5 Mile Road Race. Won by Chris Meyler of Pontypridd, who I said was "getting better all the time." Present from Croups: Robert Jones, David Headon, Kevin Sullivan, Dave Weeden, Edwina Turner, Dave Bright, Carol Miller, Cath Gardner, Tina Rossitter, Daniel Rossitter, and Sandra Caveney.
- Great Welsh Run. Full results from the other five mile race in Cardiff on June 2.
- Poole 10k. Ken Bray told me that Richie Bullen came 5th overall, out of more than 1000 runners (and the first two were Kenyan) in 32-something - Yvonne was 16th woman.
- Lake Vyrnwy Marathon. Cled Jones ran 3:34, followed home by Matt Townsend (3:43), and Gareth Jones (3:56).
- Cosmeston Sprint Triathlon. Dave Price was 42nd; Errol Alexis was 100th.
May
- Bath Hilly Ten. Ceri and Ray Donovan, Glenda Edwards, Clare Johnson, Carol Miller, and Dave Weeden.
- SSAFA 5k. Impressive turnout from Cardiff, and seemingly millions of Croups ran. Wendy Edwards was first woman; Richie Bullen first vet.
- Berkeley 10 km. Keith McGeoch was our only runner here.
- Hereford Half Marathon. Glenda Edwards was third in 1:35:01, and Matt Townsend squeaked in just behind the first woman in 1:29:10.
- British Championships Elite Male Olympic Distance Triathlon. David Haines was 8th overall.
- Ty Hafan 5k. Barry. Mick McGeoch was first in 16:31; and Cath Gardner was first woman in 20:13. Sandy Johnston was 2nd vet in 17:58. Others: Scott Howell 18.43; Mike Davies 19.46; Tina Rossiter 23.23; Elaine Adams 27.16; Keith Velda 28.37; Tracy Newman 30.24.
- Broloppet Half Marathon, Denmark. Geoff Cram liked this so much in 2001 he went back again this year and ran 1:49:05.
- Rose Inn 4M. How we did.
- 15th National Veterans Road Relays. Yvonne Bullen, Edwina Turner, and Wendy Edwards were 7th in the V35 category; Sue Neal, Jane Blacker, and Marilyn Rowson were 11th in the V45s; Michael Davies, David Walsh, Jeff Aston, John Plain, Desmond Davies, and Mel James were 24th in the V50s; Robert Evans, Dave Headon, Dick Brewer, Richard Bullen, Mick McGeoch, David Lloyd, Terry Caveney, and Kelvin Sullivan were 40th in the V40 race.
- Knockdhu International Race. Where our Owain Jones and Rob Jones (no relation) wore their first Welsh vests, and came 33rd (Owain) and 43rd (Rob) out of 119.
- Fairwater Try-A-Tri. (400m/10M/3M) Dave Price was 10th (if you read the table carefully) in 59:46, and Chris Gildersleve 20th in 1:02:30.
- Bern 10M. Dick Brewer ran 1:11:39 and Frank Moritz 1:02:59.
- Craig yr Aderyn Half Marathon. Yvonne Bullen, woman on the spot reports: Richie Bullen was 4th and 1st vet in 72.24. The Croups men got 3rd place in the Vets team (RB, Clive Osmond, Alan Mann). I was 4th lady and 1st vet 35 in 90.30 (PB by 2.5 mins! sorry to be so boring!) Clare Johnson was 1st vet 50 and Annie Conroy was 1st vet 55. We got 2nd ladies team (myself, Heidi Williams and Annie Conroy) and 2nd lady vets team (myself, Annie and Clare Johnson). There are some photographs of the race at www.sportpixs.co.uk.
- Brackla Harriers 10k. Julian Baker (2nd), Dave Headon, Richard Boon, Matt Townsend, Mike Davies, Edwina Turner (2nd Senior Lady), Mel James, Des Davies, Julie Scholey, Elizabeth Mellett, Tina Rossiter, Ceri Donovan, Nichola Williams, Wayne Turner, Jemma Ward, and Faye Ryan. Karen from Brackla emailed to say that our "entry was by far the biggest of all the clubs," (16 out of 134 finishers) and to thank all who ran.
- Great West Run Half Marathon. Matthew Davey powered round in 1:25:23 and was 92nd (on page 2); Mal Rowson finished in 2:06:08 (on page 24).
April
- Pentyrch Hill Race Julian Baker was second, Rob Jones came fifth overall and second vet and scored his first Welsh vest, Andy Cleves (7th) and Matt Townsend (25th) joined Julian in the senior male team; Nigel Webb (9th), and Dave Headon (11th) took the vets along with Rob. Carol Miller was second woman. Owain Jones finished 8 sseconds behind Dave H, and was first junior, and like Rob, selected for Wales. Also ran: Mike Davies, Bill Fear, Rob Jones.
- National 12 stage relay. Simon Nurse hands out the accolades: Everybody ran exceptionally well, with fastest leg honours from us going to Julian Baker for the long stage (28.19) and Phil Cook for the short stage (16.12). I think we probably bettered last years time by about 3 minutes. A special thank you to the ever reliable Des Davies who once again ran for the team at short notice and anchored our performance by running leg 12.
- Corsham Running Club St George's Day 10K. Richie Bullen was first overall, never mind first vet. He says that the women's competition had better quality, as Yvonne only came fifth. We rather think that if the women's race had attracted 'quality', they would have won the race, but there you go.
- London Marathon -- how we did.
- Poole Runners 9th Ladies 5k. Yvonne Bullen came a very impressive second (and first vet) with a PB 19:42. She writes "I won Boots vouchers and was presented with a bouquet of flowers, which were most appreciated as everyone knows that Richie never buys me flowers!" (Well, they do now, Yvonne.)
- Welsh Road Relays. Simon Nurse filed a report on the Ace page.
- Carmarthen Mayors 5k, which I've copied into HTML from Word format, 79k if anyone wants them. From us, in finishing order, Dave Williams, Clive Osmond, Mel James, Cath Gardner, Heidi Williams, Tina Rossiter, Sue Neal, and Tracey Newman.
March
- Forest Of Dean Trails Half Marathon 2002. Dave Headon was 10th, and Dave Coles 19th. Paul Horvath of San Domenico finished between them in 14th place.
- Clevewold. 6. Andrew Cleves 1-45:24; 12. Calum Cheshire 1-52:33; 14. Terry Caveney 1-53:50; 70; 21. Julian Carter 1-59:22; Dave Weeden 3-03:19. OK, I got lost. Julian isn't a member, but his connections with the club are too complex to go into here.
- Woking TenTen Race Results. Richie Bullen came 2nd (1st vet) in the 10k -- 33:05; Yvonne came 5th lady in the 10 mile race in 68:33.
- Islywn Half Marathon. Julian Baker (2nd), Dave Williams (3rd), John Cox (7th), Clive Osmond (down, incorrectly, as a member of Lliswery), Jeff Aston, Richard Boon, Mike Murphy, Matt Townsend, Mike Davies, Alan Mann, Cled Jones, Heidi Williams, Sue Neal all ran.
- New York Road Runners Club PowerGel 20M Run. Clare Johnson was 3rd over 50.
- WSSAC ST Patrick's Day Classic 4 Miles. Clare Johnson ran 31:53 and was first woman over 50.
- Gwent League #5 United Counties Showground, Carmarthen. How we did.
- Ballycotton 10. Or, the "four seasons in one hour" race. The official results page is now divided into three, all rather large, pages, but I've boiled the top finishers, Croups, and Welsh runners into one smaller page.
- Barry 40. Not the fastest race (in fact possibly the slowest), but one of the closest, with the lead being swapped between no fewer than three runners. From the record seven entries from Croups, only four started: Andy Cleves ran a personal best for the distance, and won the Welsh Championship, while Gary Hyatt, Dick Brewer, and Gil John all finished.
- Gloucester 20. Dave Headon, Dave Coles, Clive Osmond, Cai Britton, Richard Boon, Mike Davies, Jonathan Bennett, and Karen Bending.
- Pegasus Multi-Terrain 8. Edwina Turner won the female race, and with Carol Miller, Julie Scholey, and Tina Rossiter won the female team competition. Julian Baker won outright. Also mentioned in dispatches, Peter ('10 mph or bust') Kellam, Steve Robst, Alan Mann, and Wayne Turner.
February
- Welsh Cross-Country Championships. Not many of us ran here. Only Julie Scholey, Heidi Williams, Ceri Donovan, Tina Rossiter, and Angela Neal in the women, and only Phil Cook and Paul Wheeler in the men. But then, not many ran.
- Atlantic College 10k. Notable performances from Julian Baker (4th), Mick McGeoch (6th and 1st vet), as well as Ron Rogers, who beat John Cox. Chris Meyler from Pontypridd seems to be getting better all the time. Ruth Pickavance from Swansea comfortably won the women's race and beat all but two of our men. From Croups, Edwina Turner was first woman, and Julie Lewis is narrowing the gap between her husband, Steve, and herself. It looks like it will be a while before she can beat him in a 10k: the marathon may be a different animal though.
- Tough Ten. Carol Miller finished an impressive sixth in the women's race. Dave Bennion and Marilyn Rowson were also there.
- Dursley Dozen. Terry Caveney, Liz Clarke, Andy Cleves, Dave Coles, Sue Neal, Angela Neal, Matt Townsend, Dave Weeden, and Dave Williams showed up for this.
- Pontypridd Reverse 10. In finishing order: Dave Price, Dave Lloyd (bet he wishes this was a club championhip race now), Des Davies, Glenda Edwards, Tina Rossiter, and Colin "Flash" Slocombe.
- Nick Beer 10k Road Race. Llandudno. Dave Thomas was 70th in 41:29.
- Gwent League #4 Woodhouse Park, Almondsbury. The muddy one. How we did.
January
- Liswerry 8. Julian Baker, Mike Murphy, Jeff Aston (third man over 50), Richard Boon, Matt Townsend, Wayne Turner, Andrew Sedgmond, Tina Rossiter, Nichola Williams, Marilyn Rowson (second woman over 50), Sophie Raine, Jemma Ward, and Faye Ryan all ran. Tina Rossiter, Nichola Williams, and Marilyn Rowson made up the third women's team.
