- Atacama Crossing Stage 1. Sunday, 23 July 2006. Atacama Desert, Chile. 102 people finished. 2 Croups members ran. Julian Carter 5:03:28 (4th); Andy Cleves 5:03:28 (5th).
Andy says: Today was a hard stage for a first stage, so everyone says. Despite the massive descent with some nice bits to run, we spent most of our time ’canyoning’ with goodness knows how many crossings of the same river. We were surprised to catch up with the front runners and only did so because the conditions did not permit them to run properly. So we ended up 4th despite going fairly easy. Doubt it will last though. We are in good shape; no blisters as yet. Our gaiters have broken though. Local people exceptionally friendly and helpful. We have no real ill effects from altitude.
- Atacama Crossing Stage 2. Monday, 24 July 2006. Atacama Desert, Chile. 114 people finished. 2 Croups members ran. Julian Carter 6:09:18 (6th); Andy Cleves 6:09:18 (7th).
Andy says: Today was spectacular - long wade through a slot canyon, a tunnel and a massive sand dune. We made a bad mistake which added 1.5km which we could hve done without but we finished okay. Environment is amazing, freezing at night with strong sun by day. We are both physically in reasonable shape considering, but I am finding it emotionally difficult. Jules seems to be fine and helped me through a bad patch today. After only 2 days, the 50 miler seems a tall order. I may not be able to send may more emails but thank you to everyone who has sent word to us, please keep them coming, they are a huge boost.

Today was a bit better - we had 20k of good running to start and later the ground got very hard and spiky. Later there were dunes too. In the end I was flagging behind a bit but we made it again. I went to see the docs and hey sorted out 2 toes that are mashed up. I hope they will last another day. I hope also that I can stick with Jules. All the good wishes by email have made me dig deep. I think Jules is stll in good shape. Many thanks to everyone who has sent invaluable messages of support. Goodness knows what the course will be 2moro Andrew.

From Ben Fergusson’s Blog: Mad Dogs and Englishmen "Then theres the Welsh Machine. Jules and Andrew, both hailing from Cardiff are basically the equivalent of the T1000 from Terminator 2. They run the same speed constantly and frankly I am getting a little fed up with them running me down everyday. When I got a chance to speak with them during stage 2, I realized that their running style and personalities were out of whack. Both are mild mannered, ones a zoologist and the other a cancer researcher. They were complaining to me about being too high in the overall ranking. Apparently it was ruining their race with all the pressure and whatnot." Andy Cleves: As you will see from the results Julian and I have decided to each row our own boat. Jules was often stronger on the difficult terrain and the decision was prompted when yesterday they drew a line at 6th place (Jules) for a later start, even though our finishing times were identical! We had 2 minutes to make a decision and we think it was the correct one. As it happened there was no delayed start but we ran our own races all the same. Today there is a delayed start before the long stage og 70km. It has been shortened from 80 because day 1 was difficult. Jules and I are off with the top 35 at 11.00am. I have taken the opportunity to have some extra scoff. I have visited the medical tent who have helped my feet again and also given me some diclofenac for a swollen foot; the docs are great. My body is tired but today really is the race, the last 4 days were just attrition beforehand. I hope I can do the lot in 1 hit and get to sleep some time in the small hours. It will be a bit like Thames Meander I hope. Yesterday was a real sod of a course: 11km through salt flats, which were sometimes coral sharp and other times really mushy. You could nevertell until you stood on it. Hope th SSAFA went well. Today will be very telling. Thank you for all emails. Best wishes to all Andy ad Jules

Dear All Julian and I have spent today dosing in the campsite since luckily we finished the 70km stage in 1 hit. We had a delayed start to 10.00am. Julian had an absolute stormer as you’ll see in the results. I did okay too and kept running on all the ground that was runnable. There was far more runnable terrain today than on any other day so far, so despite being the longest stage it was not as dreadful as I might have imagined. It started with about 10km through the dreaded salt pan and also an ankle deep marsh for a bit. Later on there was much more running save for one massive dune, which took us through a range of hills. Later on there was more running to be had with an incredible final stage in the dark through the valley of the moon, including caves. I was glad to be with 3 others for this tricky stage with some scrambling: two Americans plus a Canadian; we made a good eam for the final stretch. I can’t say how glad I am that the big stage is over and now we have only the formality of 11km into San Pedro de Atacama tomorrow. My legs are still okay, but feet a bit mashed up. We both have holes in our shoes and our gaiters fellapart on day 1 and have needed daily repair. Julian’s position of 5^th overall and first Brit looks safe, with me 8^th at the moment and 2^nd Brit, so the two Taffies are happy with that, so long as there is no disaster tomorrow. We have had a super week and made new friends although for me the lows were very low! I’m fine now though and looking forward to catching up with everyone. A final thank you for all the sponsorship for Cancer Care Cymru and for the much valued emails of support. Best wishes all & see you soon Andy and Julian.

The course covers approximately 7 miles of mixed terrain. It circles the town and ascends and descends the Kymin, a local viewpoint at 850ft, by forest tracks, field paths and minor roads to end on Chippenham Mead - the town recreation ground. The Course record is 38mins 54secs, set by P. Wheeler in 1985.

This race is a low key, two lap, off road course in the Afan Valley organised by Port Talbot Harriers (£2 entry fee). It is a picturesque, well marshalled route through woodland disturbed only by the occasional walker but more frequently by extremely polite mountain bikers. The initial gradual climb is punctuated at a mile and a half by a steep drop to the river followed by a longer, steep climb up the valley side to the return downhill track. Presentations of winners’ plaques were held in the Miners’ Pub (Pontrhydyfen RFC clubhouse). Cheap beer prices were an added attraction. Highly recommended. Mike Davies.

We had the biggest entry (79) for the 7th holding of this event and a record 72 finished. In what would have appeared good conditions fast times seemed hard to come by but there were some notable perfomances by veterans. Richard Bullen’s time of 16:36 looked safe until Dave Williams started last. Although Dave passed several earlier starters he finished just 12 seconds outside the club’s eternally youthful treasurer. Richie’s time put him 3rd on the alltime Vet 40 list and 1st on the Vet45. A late replacement for Richard Sewell, Sandy Johnston ran 18:17 for 3rd on the all time Vet 50 list and 1st Vet 55. Claire Beatty got round in 20:17 which was good enough to win the ladies race but recent addition Lindsay Emyr ran her close with 20:33 Julie Scholey posted 21:01 for 5th Vet 40 and 2nd Vet 45. In the Team race, Scott Howell, Deb Green, and Liz Mellett were 79 seconds clear of second place due in no small part to Deb’s 90s improvement over the distance.

Like Berlin, this was a one-man dominated race from start to finish. Patrick Makau crossed the line in a creditable 28:55 and an incredible 91 seconds ahead of second place. Richie Bullen led Les Croups home with an impressive 33:35, though he was only the third man over 45 - the still impressive Martin Rees and Peter Hockin of Bideford somehow got in front. The first 100 were all under 37 minutes which shows that some quality showed up, and Steve Brace could do no better than 101st. Further back, Tony Dorsett and Mal Rowson squeaked in under the unforgiving hour mark.

Thanks to Phil George for sending me the spreadsheet. It’s not Phil’s fault of course but that is the one of the most cack-handed documents I’ve ever fiddled with. There are three separate (and incompatible) ways of recording times: four if you could the ones with spaces before the seconds.
