- Welsh Inter-Regional Cross-Country Champs. Richard Bullen won the veterans’ (here called Masters’) race outright, in a time which would have beaten Julian Baker in the senior race. Wendy J Edwards and Jo Pritchard had a similar virtual battle in the Women’s races. I couldn’t understand the team results or the age categories, so these are simplified results.

November
- Gwent League #3: Bath University. This was the furthest away fixture for us this season, so numbers were, not surprisingly down, even if John Plain did cycle over (he came back on the bus). Team positions: we lead the Senior Women, Female Veterans Over 35, Male Veterans Over 40, and Male Veterans Over 50, and are second in everything else. How we did.
- Lanzarote Half Marathon. Richard Boon: 1:38:52; Wendy Edwards: 1:40:06 — 3rd woman overall and 1st in her age group 40-44 (she also won 180 euros). Very hot ,windy and tough.
- British/Irish Masters Cross-Country. Every participating nation won some event. There was a good local turnout in the open races. Martin Rees prevented an English whitewash of the top five places in the Mens’ race.

- Gwent League #1, Bridgend. The first race of the season and the Les Croups men storm to head the team results, helped in no small measure by David’s 6th place. The others teams came 7th, 21st, 30th, and 53rd. The women could only manage 3rd, 8th, 22nd, and 41st, but as many others have observed, this is a marathon, not a sprint. How we did.

- Islwyn Half Marathon. 23 Croups turned out for this pre-spring marathon tune-up. Brackla’s Nick Janvier won in style, beating Gareth Davies by nearly a minute. Recent Barry 40 winner Sam Bretherwick cruised home in 20th place. Archived results.
- Forest of Dean Trails Half Marathon. Graeme Donnan was 62nd with 91.25.
- Cleevewold Keith McGeogh was 15th in 1:56:25.
- Bath Half Marathon. We had at least 20 runners on the day. Martin Rees of Swansea got the over-fifty world record, according to Mick, who heard from Richie Gardner. How we did.
- Gwent League #5. Pembrey Park, Llanelli. How we did.
- Orvault Half Marathon, France. Julian Baker: 72:03; John Cox: 78:04.
- Ballycotton 10. Once again, the weather was horrible and there was a phalanx of Welsh runners out here. Phil Cook finished 16th, behind Darran Hiscox and Gareth Davies, but ahead of Shaun Tobin and Mark Hobbs (who all run for Swansea). Barry Johnston was first M50. Also present: Dave Lloyd, Sue Neal, and Annie Conroy. As the original pages are rather large, here are the Welsh runners (or the ones I know about).
- Gloucester 20. From us: David Headon, Jeffrey Aston, Richard Boon, Stuart Reeves, Matthew Davey, Stephen Lewis, Mike Davies, Wendy Edwards, Julie Lewis, Andrew Holden, Stephen Katchi, Carol Miller, Christina Rossiter, Jemma Ward, Alan Thomas, Claire Turner, and Paula Spittle.
- Barry 40 Mile Track Race. Brian Hennessey of Crawley won, having taken the lead in the opening kilometre, and barely slowed over the next four hours. Jeff Rees took the Welsh honours, despite having a heavier second half. Our own Alan Mann and Terry Caveney took silver and bronze respectively. Samantha Bretherick won the women’s race.
- Carlton Cold Ironman New Zealand. Russ Stephens completed Ironman New Zealand (in Taupo) in 15.18.02 (876th). Split times: 3.8K swim 1.15.00; 180K cycle 7.50.27; 42.2K run 5.51.20. As Simon Nurse said: Another pretty major effort from the Stephens family (after Sue’s Hawaii Ironman in October).
February
- Welsh Cross-Country Championships. Les Croupiers came third in both senior races.
- Saucony English National Cross Country Championships. Dave Miller was 600th in 55:55.
- Atlantic College 10k. Everyone seemed to think that the wind was worth around half a minute: it seems to have been a cold hard slog.
- West Glamorgan Cross Country League #. Mel James was 44th.
- Pontypridd Reverse 10. Richard Boon 66:10; Michael Davies: 69:17; Wendy Edwards: 70:33; Julie Scholey: 71:31; Joanna Pritchard: 72:52; Jan Williams: 73:10; Denis Murphy: 74:36; Frances Williams: 77:22; Mie Lister: 79:38; Christina Rossitter: 80:28; Alan Haycox: 84:07; Stephen Williams: 87:48; Geoff Wright: 89:47; Tony Dorsett: 96:02. Les Croups women (Wendy Edwards, Julie Scholey, and Jo Pritchard) took the team prize. As the Ponty Roadents site seems to be down at present, they’re here instead.
- Dursley Dozen. Dave Coles: 52nd, 92:48; Graeme Donnan 134th, 101.54; David Weeden 203rd, 107.28; Sue Neal 291st, 116.50; Colin Slocombe 376th, 128.01; Mel James 377th 128.05; Clare Johnson 432nd, 148.19. There’s nothing like consistency, and the organisers have certainly been that, having spelled my name incorrectly every time I’ve run. In 1999, they at least went for originality, listing me as Dave Leeden; the last two times as Dave Weedon. As long as I continue to run badly, I don’t really care. Of course, last year they had Julian Baker’s name completely wrong, but that wasn’t really their fault.
- Wokingham Half Marathon. Our performances look like this: Phil Cook 7th 1:12; Mick McGeoch 10th 1:13; Barry Johnston 2nd V50 1:18.
- Gwent League #4 Blaise Castle. A small turnout at what is one of the more popular venues. How we did
January
- Club 10 Mile Handicap. Route slightly altered due to the work (aka vandalism) on the riverbank after the weir.
- Lliswerry 8. Richard Boon, Wendy Edwards, Stephen Katchi, Frances Williams, Andrew Holden, and Marilyn Rowson decided to forgo the club AGM, the free "food", and the speeches for the first race in the Celtic Manor Grand Prix series. How we did.
- Reebok Cross Country Womens Results. Only Julie Scholey (34th; 27:42) was foolhardy enough to challenge an elite field. Our men: Richie Bullen (24th; 33:59), Phil Cook (30th; 34:51), Rob Jones (31st; 36:26), Simon Nurse (32nd; 36:35), Barry Johnston (33rd; 36:38), Peter Kellam (34th; 37:03), David Miller (38th; 38:15), Dave Bright (43rd; 40:41), and Alan Mann (50th; 46:11).
- Cwmafon Richard Burton 10k. I’m grateful to Jo Pritchard who asked the organisers for these — she was also second Croups finisher. Swansea conclusively won the team race, hogging the first three places. Julian Baker pipped Nick Janvier (who organises the Atlantic College 10K).
- Gloucester New Year 10. Matt Townsend, Martin Clissold, and Bill Fear were the only members to brave "a treacherous course that was covered in ice "on a bloody cold day."
