Every Thursday 6:30 (for 7PM) at Llandaff Rugby Club, Western Avenue, CF5 2AZ. If you want to join, the best thing is just to come along. However, as not everyone comes every week, most people won’t know if you’re new or not. You’ll have to make yourself known and ask around to find someone compatible to run with. It helps if you have a recent race time for comparison.
The clubhouse is on the eastbound side of Western Avenue, next to UWIC campus, between Cardiff Road and the river Taff. The bridge over Western Avenue now has UWIC written on it in large friendly letters, although of course you may have missed the turn by then. Turn at the traffic lights outside UWIC.
Please note: UWIC Car Park (where many of us park on Thursday evenings) is now Pay and Display
. It costs 50p evenings and weekends against fixed penalty notices of £40. The Rugby Club car park remains free of charge.
If the clubhouse is easy to miss, the UWIC building next door should stand out.
Map showing where we are courtesy of Multimap.com. This is set to show where we are in Cardiff, but you can zoom in using the controls on the left of the screen.
And another map, courtesy of the all-new Google Maps. If you know your postcode, it’ll give you a route there (of sorts).
Bus: number 1. Ample Parking. “Showers” and “food” available.
If you feel you’d rather talk to someone first, here are some phone numbers.

We stick to a few simple routes, as this makes social running easier. ‘Social running’ runs the gamut of gossiping at an easy pace, to the classic club ‘burn-ups’ at race pace (or faster).
We have runners of every ability, so anyone coming down for the first time should easily find someone to show them round. No one gets left behind.
During British Summer Time (when it’s light) our runs head up the “Taff Trail” for the short run of 5–6 miles (which turns at Radyr), the medium run of >7 miles (which includes the canal), and the long run of 9–10 (which goes to Castell Coch).
A brief description of the Summer route. I’ve now added very rough maps (which may in fact confuse) and got rid of the old pictures.
In the winter, as it’s dark, we stick to the city streets. All routes go past Heath Park, and the shorter one turns off to return past Roath Lake Park, while the longer version passes through Penylan and Cyn Coed. Distances are comparable to summer.
A brief description of the Winter route.
Most of us do, but it’s not a requirement of membership. Our practice is that we gather together for a run, and then eat and drink together afterwards.
We do have social training sessions, and mixed-ability Sunday social runs.
By keeping it simple, everyone gets to meet everyone else in time. For more advanced training, first find people on your own level, who will help more than theories or training manuals ever can. Then you can explore the tracks around town, the “marked mile“ in Sophia Gardens, the hills running up from Roath Park to Cyn Coed, the dunes at Methyr Mawr …
