We regret that we will no longer run the Ladies’ Fireworks 5 from 2009. Over the years the Fireworks 5 has moved from being one of the few (if not only) Ladies-only races in South Wales to one of many events, notably the Race for Life series. (See our links to sites for Women’s Running.) The advent also of many more ‘beginner-friendly events’ has also had an impact on the race and unfortunately the Club has decided that the 2008 event was the final running of the race due to only 35 entrants and the subsequent financial loss made on the event.
The Club will move the Kay Prichard Memorial Award to the OFT5 race and hopes all women over 35 who supported the Fireworks 5 will support this event from 2009. For all younger ladies (and the over 35’s as well) the Club recommends the weekly ‘parkrun’ as an excellent way to start running in a friendly competitive manner.

This is a rough map, drawn with the Gmaps pedometer, which measured the route as 4.909 miles (not bad, based on guesswork!).
Link to gmap-pedometer map. This will not be 100% accurate as the council are fooling around near the old footbridge, and the start and/or finish will doubtless have to move to take into account the full distance.
The race starts at the Western Avenue end of the road through Pontcanna Fields and heads down the ‘marked mile’ past the playing fields and the Glamorgan Cricket Ground. The first lap turns left (toward the river) just before the Welsh Institute of Sport, and then left again to head back up the river. At the footbridge at Blackweir, it turns left along the footpath (this is the only part, or parts, as you come this way again, not on concrete), back to the road. Another left turn takes you down the same as the first lap, this time continuing past the WIS toward the gates on Cowbridge Road East, there you take the footpath back to the river and follow the river back up to Blackweir again. After crossing the playing fields this time, you turn right with about 600m to go back to the start.
In memory of Kay Pritchard (1947 - 98), an always supportive and encouraging companion.
