Les Croupiers Running Club Cardiff

Barry 40 2003

Sunday March 2

Tony Holling of Port Talbot took the lead in the opening lap, pulling the field round in just outside six-minute miling (four hour pace). Brian Hennessey of Crawley moved to the front when Tony eased of the gasoline, and barely slowed over the next four hours. Chris Finill of Harrow, the race winner in 2000, improved his time by over two minutes, but came second. Last year's victor, Mikk Bradley, could only manage sixth.

Jeff Rees took the Welsh honours, despite having a heavier second half. Our own Alan Mann and Terry Caveney took silver and bronze respectively. The highest placed (ex) Croupier was Frank Moritz who set off with Walter Hill and Jeff Rees, but was the first to feel the distance catching up with him. Alan Mann ran very steadily, even picking off a couple of runners for his medal position. Terry Caveney in his ultra debut discovered how much it hurts after thirty miles. Richard Brewer scored a PB in his fourth outing at Barry. Graeme Donnan, another ultra debutant, also found the last 10K hard but pushed on to finish ahead of Barry veteran Gary Hyatt, who initially seemed to have outfoxed his club mates with better pace judgement, until an old groin injury made itself felt again.

Gil John, who has run more marathons than anyone else in the club (over 200) clocked up another one in 6:18. John Crofts, who has won a marathon on a horse, but only entered Barry in January, struggled with blisters, but fought his way to the finish.

Samantha Bretherick won the women's race on her ultra debut.
