Blokes night out. Sort of.

It’s that time of year again. Time to neck back the traditional pint of Wadworth’s 6X and break out the festive onion bhajis. A secret plot has been hatched for some Christmas tomfoolery on Friday the 10th of December, kicking off at the Chapter in Canton, where extra strong Belgian Ale is sold in funny glasses, and then drifting on the tide of destiny towards any curry house that will have us. This plan takes into account proximity to the train station for visitors on bail from Barry* and an abundance of pubs and fine cuisine from the sub-continent. It may be organised by the blokes, but anybody is welcome really. There are not many Les Croups blokes who would shun the company of the fairer sex. It stops us talking about DIY and combustion engines.

7.30pm Friday the 10th December at the Chapter Arts Centre in Canton.

* We like people from Barry really, Especially Mick and Phil. Barry is one of the nicest suburbs of Penarth.

There’s a new kid in town

In recognition of Phil’s excellent work for the club over the past few years and his huge input to Les Croupiers Triathletes, Mr Cook has officially been given the job of Vice Captain. I will take this opportunity to personally thank him for his support over the last 12 months. Sometimes there are not enough hours in the day to juggle work, study, training and club duties, and Phil has always been prepared to step into the breach whenever necessary. Thanks Phil.

So if I am not at an event or at the club, Phil is your man. The wheels of Les Croupiers administration will turn even more efficiently. For a start, he has got a much better memory than me, he always (ALWAYS) has a pen and he is a demon with a cowbell.

Gwent League Arrangements

The next round of the Gwent League will take place on SUNDAY 5th December (not Saturday 4th). The venue is the University of Bath. Given the lengthy travelling distance, a bus will be available and will leave Llandaff Rugby Club PROMPTLY at 9.30 AM. Race times and distances are:

Ladies 12.10 5.8 K (2 large laps)
Men 2.20 10.6 K (1 Medium and 3 large laps)

Please note that the Sports Centre will not be available this year (no doubt as a result of it being left so muddy last year). So please dress and bring warm clothes to suit any weather conditions. John Griffin has said that the club tent is available to any member who wishes to collect it from his house.

If you haven’t yet done so, please inform Simon or Sue, as your respective captains of your intention to compete, and please report to our race day admin. team of Ken/Reg/Derek at least an hour before the off. Remember — they have 50–60 athletes to consider, you only have yourself, so please don’t be late!

Born to Run

Running is in the news after a Nature article on human evolution is summarised by the Telegraph, the BBC, Reuters, and there’s a much more technical discussion on Pharyngula.

Winter cross training

Just to prove that we go the extra mile, we now have a new training session that will allow you to log lots of extra miles in a nice safe environment. From 7.30pm on Monday the 22nd November an indoor cycle class will be available exclusively to Les Croupiers members at Leckwith Athletic stadium. The session will involve a high intensity workout on stationary bikes overseen by a qualified instructor. Perfect cross training for the triathlete and non-triathlete alike. Act fast though, as spaces are very limited (unless you have your own turbo trainer).

Comments are now closed. If interested, please contact Simon on simön.nürsé@cäpitàlcs.cóm (using non-accented vowels).

Well Run, Fatty! Pt 2

Dave Lloyd completed his first (and the sensible section of the club hopes his last too) ultra marathon—the 46.7KM (by GPRS) “Castillos de Ávila” — and he’s been suspiciously jolly ever since. Despite there being about 150 runners (of whom around 130 finished), he’s unfairly represented in the official photos. He won the raffle too, scoring a luxury weekend for two in Spain. Dai, don’t forget who your best friend is!

Dave Lloyd wins the raffle.

Well run, fatty!

Didn’t she do well? But more importantly, didn’t she look well? I couldn’t believe it was the same gaunt looking athlete that looked so unhappy in Athens.
Paula, you were an inspiration in New York, as always. And to everyone who called her "Quitter" after Athens - EAT YOUR WORDS! Eating has always been the key! Must dash - it’s time for tea!

Rob Atkinson - Update

This entry supplements Rob Atkinson - R.I.P. (30 Oct). Thanks to Phil Hexter and Sean Tresilian for their comments. Some more info. regarding Rob’s funeral. It will be on Monday 8th November, starting 12.15 PM at Porthkerry Road Methodist Church, Barry. Thereafter burial at Barry Cemetary and then to the Cwm Ciddy, Port Road West. The following may seem a little unusual, but for those of you who knew Rob well, totally in keeping with his life.

Monday will be a celebration of Rob’s life, please note - A CELEBRATION. Rob will be buried in his running kit and trainers. There will also be a map and compass in the coffin, though Rob’s sense of direction was always better than mine. He has also invited runners past and present, to attend in their kit i.e. vest and shorts (if their inhibitions allow). Being a rugby follower also, Rob invites rugby fans to attend in their Welsh rugby shirts. Please don’t feel out of place, Rob discussed all this with his son Gareth in his final hours, and this is what he wants.

Rob lived his all too short life to the full, and this reflected his passions of running, drinking and socialising. I could just about match him at running (mainly because he was by nine years my senior) but when it came to drinking and socialising he was a man without equal (and believe me, I tried very hard!)

I know he will be sorely missed by many - his enthusiasm and love of life was such that it was difficult not to share his passions. I’m sure that those whose life he touched still do.

November Hill rep schedule

The Hill rep schedule for this month….

Tuesday 2nd November meet at bottom of Lady Mary Road at 6.15pm for warm-up, 6.30pm start.
Tuesday 9th November meet outside Cardiff High School at 6.15pm for warm-up, 6.30pm start.
Tuesday 16th November meet at bottom of Lady Mary Road at 6.15pm for jog warm-up to Waterloo Road Penylan. 6.30pm start at Waterloo Road.
Tuesday 23rd November meet at bottom of Lady Mary Road at 6.15pm for warm-up, 6.30pm start.
Tuesday 30th November meet outside Cardiff High School at 6.15pm for warm-up, 6.30pm start.

I’ve reluctantly removed Cefn Coed Road and Highfield Road from the schedule due to the increasing volumes of traffic on both roads and the large size of our training group. A new session at Waterloo Road has been introduced affording the opportunity to train on a very quiet street less than a mile away from the other hill reps. For this session, we will meet at the bottom of Lady Mary Road and use the jog over to Waterloo Road as a warm-up.

Look forward to seeing you on the hills.
