Teenage kicks all through the night.

Congratulations to Rob and Becky Sage on the birth of daughter Elwyn Louise, who weighed in at 8 lbs. 14 oz. on Saturday 24th April at 4.30 AM. Bring her to club night, please and Derek will give you a membership form. I have to say I wondered if the baby was a boy whether he would have been named Herb.

Congratulations to Rob Jones who represented Wales in the Home Countries Mountain Running International at Larne, Northern Ireland on Saturday 24th April. Rob placed an excellent 15th in the event, and helped Wales to second international team prize, only losing out to Scotland on countback after team scores were tied. It was no more than Rob deserved after an excellent cross-country season. Thanks to Rod “the rally” Jones for results and congratulations also as Rod was Welsh Team Manager.

Thursday 6th May, 2004 will mark the 50th anniversary of Sir Roger Bannister’s epic mile of 3:59.4. Whilst not too many of us were around to see the original performance, we all have an opportunity to commemorate it by having a go ourselves.
Yes, amazingly, not too many of us have ever run a mile, or even run on a track. So here’s your chance. This coming Thursday (6th) we have booked Cyncoed Track from 6.30 to 8.30PM. We will be holding a number of unseeded one mile training runs. These are open to anyone, of any age, and not necessarily members of Les Croupiers.
To help facilitate the event, participants may be asked to timekeep, record or simply give vocal encouragement. It’s that kind of event.
Given that this special event falls on a Thursday, it’s a one off. So come on, give it a go! And it’s back to Llandaff RC after for the usual…

We’ve now switched hosts, and I’ve ironed out most bugs. I’ve ditched the bulletin board as it wasn’t being used. I’ve found most pages, so there shouldn’t be much stuff missing. ‘Ace’ as you can see is back and up-to-date, but I’ve got a problem with the archived pages which I hope to have fixed by the end of the day.
Now seems like a good time to attempt to explain posting and commenting policy. There isn’t one. I’m doing this not by principles but by intuition and whatever seems to work.
Dave Lloyd asked me how he could write a post here, and took me to task as undemocratic when I told him that he couldn’t: posting is currently restricted to Mick, Simon, and myself. This wasn’t intended as an elitist practice; I originally ran ‘Ace’ in tandem with the bulletin board. There were problems with the board which are inescapable, it seems to me. If everyone is entitled to speak, two things seem to happen: the quality and reliability of discourse is devalued, and people tend to wait for someone more authoritative to speak for them.
Dave Lloyd will doubtless consider the following essentially undemocratic, but I’ll venture it anyway:
…MPs do not go to the House of Commons to listen. They go to talk. This makes Westminster quite unlike almost any other platform on which a politician might be asked to speak. At a public meeting the audience have generally come to hear the speech. Great parliamentary characters, well-known orators and party leaders can still usually count on a curious audience inside parliament. But the rest of the time the chamber is filled with people who are there because they want to make a speech themselves.
Jeremy Paxman, The Political Animal p 121–122
Simon and Mick got the right to post not just because I think they’re widely regarded as knowledgeable and good blokes within the club, but because they were the ones who asked me to put announcements on — they were the ones with something to say.
I’ll get comments working as soon as I can.
Update: Comments are now working again.
Unfortunately due to logistical reasons, the men’s team will not be travelling up to Birmingham to compete in the 12 stage road relays. This doesn’t effect the ladies team and team members should continue to liaise with Sue.
Next year we hope to be back and duking it out with best!

Malin Falck, Lynne Toogood, Simon Nurse, and myself watched the live broadcast of the London Marathon chez Clare Johnson.
We talked of other things through most of it, and, as the race itself is rendered impossible to follow, why not? I’d like to have seen how the men’s lead pack was winnowed from ten or more at half way to two Kenyans by the Tower of London. I suppose we’ll never know.
Someone spotted Julie Scholey on the start line of the elite race, but I can’t say I recognised her, and with her dayglo crop, she’s not that hard to miss among the more introverted serious runners. I glimpsed Alan Mann on the Embankment, and Graeme Donnan finishing just behind someone quite famous (but not so much so that I knew who it was), and Andy Cleves floated past the winners’ podium on The Mall. But the person who got the most television coverage was Maggie Hughes, running in Clare Johnson’s vest and passed on the cobbles by Jon Brown. Unbearable excitement filled Clare’s living room when her vest was seen again near the finish.
Mystic Mick will have to retire to the betting shop in a better place: I think if he had an each way bet on Gharib, he might just have scraped a profit, but I’m glad that I bottled out of a trip to Wm Hill. He was wrong too, about not catching Scholey -- I calculate that he passed towards the end of the Embankment.
Julian ran a solid 2:28, for the the only club member to run sub 2:30, but Dave Williams managed a PB of 2:31. Maggie crossed the line after 2 hours and 58 minutes which I’m pleased is minute slower than my lasst London (although a lot quicker than my last marathon). Feel free to add your own experiences.

As Mick would say, ’We all like a bit of banter,’ and those of you who read other weblogs will know that comment threads quickly degenerate from argument, through contradiction, into abuse. This is also the way newsgroups have worked since anyone started using the internet for anything more serious than passing around pornography.
However, we’re supposed to be a club here. We (mostly) know each other. There are some posts here which are frivolous -- and there are others which are informative, and are an easy way for us to enjoy something resembling a two-way conversation. If someone like Simon, in the post two before this one, goes to the trouble of organising a trip or an event, I’d appreciate it if comments were kept relevant, and didn’t drift off into nit-picking.

As announced at last Thursday’s club night, Les Croupiers youth policy really is working! A warm welcome to Lewis Dukes, born 4th April, 2004, weighing in at 6 lbs. 7 oz. and brother to 3 year old Chloe! Well done to proud parents, Emma and Nick! One important fact I forgot to announce though, is that all Croupiers are invited to a celebration drink at the Beverley Hotel, this Friday (16th), starting at 7.00PM. In fact, for those of you going on the London trip, you may as well stay out all night, and start the weekend as you mean to go on!
At the other end of the age spectrum, one of Croups most popular and hardworking members, Mel James, celebrated his 60th birthday last Thursday.
Never! And just to show he’s Peter Pan, Mel took the silver medal in the Welsh 5km road championships at Carmarthen on Easter Monday! Well done, Mel!

The Lake District weekend has now been firmed up, details are as follows;
Friday 21st May — Leave Llandaff RFC at 5.30pm, 2 mini-buses will be provided.
Expect to arrive at Patterdale YHA in the North East Lake District at around 9.30pm. Adjourn to pub almost immediately!!
Saturday 22nd May — Run/walk on the fells depending on preference and group.
Breakfast, packed lunch and evening meal can be arranged. After evening meal, adjourn to pub (naturally. We are athletes after all).
Sunday 23rd May — Group run on the fells followed by Sunday lunch. Aim to leave Patterdale at around 3pm to arrive back at 7pm approx.
Accommodation is bunkhouse/dormitory style with enough room for 34 people. (group size is currently 27). Cost for the weekend will be £50 for members, £60 for partners/family of members. This includes all travel and accommodation. Breakfast, packed lunch and evening meals can be arranged above and beyond this at a very reasonable price (which I heartily recommend).
Non-refundable Deposits of £20 will need to be paid by Thursday 29th April. This secures the beds at the hostel. Patterdale is an outstanding area with many fell running opportunities. The hostel itself has fantastic facilities and should prove a great base for our activities. Patterdale YHA site.
There will be a meeting about the weekend on Thursday 6th May to finalise details and eating requirements.
