Major outing at Llantwit

Where else can you get stunning views of the Bristol Channel, run past the base of a historic lighthouse and enjoy the company of like-minded individuals? On a Les Croups social run that’s where.

Carol kindly provided the tour guide duties to take our 16 strong group on a 12-mile loop from Llantwit Major Leisure centre and along the beautiful coastal path towards Atlantic College. Aided and abetted by some wonderful November weather, the run provided the perfect solution for those looking for a soul refreshing off road run.

These runs are proving to be very popular as they afford a once-a-month opportunity for club members of all abilities to complete a long run together and discover new courses and trails. I will guide the next run over a North Cardiff route, including the country trails surrounding Llanishen and Lisvane reservoirs. The run will start and finish at Heath Park carpark at 10am on Sunday 14th December.

All those interested should either post a reply here, or let either Jemma, Carol, Andy or myself know. If you haven’t tried one already, these runs come highly recommended!

I Didn’t Get Where I Am Today

Remember Reggie Perrin? More especially, remember his boss, CJ, brilliantly portrayed by John Barron? “I didn’t get where I am today...” was his famous catch phrase, which he used for almost every situation.

Here in the Croups we have our own CJ, namely Clare Johnson. She didn’t get where she is today without being able to get money out of people!

A valuable commodity! Many members will remember her “Guess my Half Marathon time at the Cardiff event on September 28.” That little venture raised a fantastic £550 for the forthcoming Home Countries Masters Cross Country International, to be held in Bute Park on November 22. Well done Clare!!

Clare’s effort follows other superb work for this event, namely Sue and Angela Neal’s Fancy Dress Fun Run in August, and Alan Mann’s excellent catering arrangements which were greatly appreciated on this year’s London Marathon trip. Well done all — yet more reasons why this club is the greatest on the planet!!

Massage Those Figures

I’m a great believer in sports massage. Each time you pound the streets your body will be exposed to considerable stresses which your legs will take the brunt of. To cope with these strains, many athletes include a regular massage as part of their regime.

Due to our loyalty scheme with Physiomatters on Cathedral Road, we have 2 free 30 minute messages to give away. The massages will be given by David Rowe, masseur to the Cardiff and Welsh Football teams. If you are interested in one of these massages, please either declare your interest on the website or give your name to me on Thursday, and two names will be drawn out of a hat (or pint glass, whichever is nearer. Knowing our club I suspect it will be the pint glass).

Les Croups Triathletes

Multi-sport is becoming increasingly popular within Les Croups, with members covering all distances from sprint triathlons (400m swim / 10k bike / 5k run) to the full Ironman distance (2.4 mile swim / 112 mile bike / 26.2 mile run).

Some see it as a way of maintaining high intensity training whilst avoiding injury, whilst others enjoy the challenge that Triathlon represents. To support those members who would like to run under the Les Croupiers banner, the club will be registering with the British Triathlon Union.

We will be registering as ‘Les Croupiers Triathletes’ rather than L.C. Triathlon club. This we feel has the right connations i.e. we are a group of runners competing under the club name, rather than an out and out triathlon club. Cardiff is already well served by Cardiff Triathletes for those seeking a specific Tri club. There will be a slight additional charge to triathlon competitors of £5 per annum to cover the cost of BTU registration.

To discuss these developments in more detail, Phil Cook and myself will chair a meeting after the announcements on Thursday 13th November, either in the committee room or skittles bar depending on availability.

Watch this space for further tri developments!

Marathon, Marathon

Dave Coles, Alan Mann, and Graeme Donnan have travelled to the US for the New York City Marathon. They will line up against Sammy Korir (the second-fastest marathon runner ever), P Diddy, and Sir Ranulph Fiennes.

P Diddy has tendonitis, Sir Ranulph has run six marathons on six continents over the past six days (and, for those who believe in such things, Iain Duncan Smith was Tory party leader for 777 days), and Sammy Korrir lost out to Paul Tergat in Berlin a mere five weeks ago, and has “‘yo-yoed’ on and off the start list.”

Paula Radcliffe was allegedly offered £500,000 but turned it down to concentrate on training for next year’s Olympics, leaving the race open to Catherine Ndereba. US hopes will be on the legally-blind Marla Runyan.
