Well Run, Fatty! Pt 2
November 12, 2004
Dave Lloyd completed his first (and the sensible section of the club hopes his last too) ultra marathon—the 46.7KM (by GPRS) “Castillos de Ávila” — and he’s been suspiciously jolly ever since. Despite there being about 150 runners (of whom around 130 finished), he’s unfairly represented in the official photos. He won the raffle too, scoring a luxury weekend for two in Spain. Dai, don’t forget who your best friend is!

Nice photos, Dave. But I must take issue with you over the word "sensible". Are you saying that running ultras isn't sensible? And what message does that send to the many members of the Croups who have run them?
Do you consider yourself to be within the "sensible section of the club" and what are the parameters of this subsection? For what it's worth, I thought that we were all crazy and it was just a question of degree. And you were somewhere near the top of the list!
Dave, you may be one of my best friends (and a jolly nice person to sleep with) but that doesn't necessarily mean you're my first choice to share a luxury Spanish weekend! Also, I'm afraid I've joined the lunatic fringe of the club, since I'll definitely be back in Avila to run the race next year - the event holds certain attractions for me.
Well done Dave (Lloyd) - take Matt T with you next year, and Bill Fear as your navigator! Do you agree Matt?!.
I personally think running more than about 5 miles is not particularly sensible (which makes me extremely mad)- that is plenty long enough to satisfy enough level of fitness. However most of us run further as we can then run slower, because running fast hurts! Mind you running 100k hurts like hell - any masochists feel free to try it. Also we are ruled by the 'importance' of the London Marathon as the premier event of the year (Castles Relay excepted, Mick!). Well good luck to any sensible or not so sensible members training for marathons (and ultras) - when you've finished, you've achieved something that very few people do.
Now that's all far too sensible - we need a comment from Alan Mann to spice things up.
He's only sensible because he's one ulta this year, he hasn't got much time to do another one. Never mind he can join me next year. What shall we start with? Oh yes the Barry 40,then Sutton park 50k, dartmor 50k two weeks later. that sould do for a start. got to build up your sinilaty.
Sorry, Alan! I couldn't quite decipher that last word. Should it read sanity or senility?
Dave, please take care who you bring along to this weekend. Okay there are frequent and cheap enough flights to Valladolid (I guess Ryanair is flying three times a week) but, beware any of the Creoupiers! I'd say a sensible (oops) option could be the first lady stopping you at Cardiff's traffic lights, and who assures she saw you in the Spanish papers last weekend.
Any of you lads and peeps who might be ready for the Avila Castles is invited to contact me. Webmaster, please do update our URL. Cheers.
Good to hear from you Luis, and congratulations to you and your fellow members of Club Correr Y Tirar for organising such a wonderful race through such a beautiful natural landscape. I'll do my best to persuade some other Croups members to join me for next year's race. Trouble is, the ultra boys and girls in the club seem to prefer running 161 times around a track in Barry, South Wales, rather than enjoying the stunning Spanish scenery - doesn't sound very sensible to me! Only joking Mick, we all love the Barry '40' really (by the way, has there ever been a Spanish runner in the race?).
As for the weekend in Valladolid, I'm playing hard to get at the moment. However, my selection criteria will be rigorous - whoever comes will have to be able to eat enough, drink enough (good red wine country) and stay awake in bed long enough (unlike Dick Brewer and Barry Johnston) to keep me company! At the moment, Luis's suggestion is the best one. Nos Da.
Dave, impressed with your forays into the world of off-road endeavour, particularly after you've suffered so badly with shin splints. You may even have inspired me into going out next year, holiday time allowing. I'm game for anything remotely like the KIMM and not involving tarmac.
On the basis of your selection criteria for the Spanish sortie, I must throw my hat into the ring. I can certainly eat my fair share of Paella and I enjoy the odd gallon of Lambrini. Also (and this is where I feel I have a particular advantage), I believe both you and Mr Price were sleeping before me in Paris. Judging by the noises coming from both ends of the pair of you, I certainly gained the impression that you were sleeping quite soundly. Apart from my qualification by virtue of staying power, I also enjoy reading, caring for small animals and hoping for world peace.
Impressive credentials indeed Simon, and, in my humble opinion, considerably more impressive than those of anyone who wouldn't fork out a tenner to buy Paula's book (wrote he, mischievously)
It's probly not finnished yet
I believe the Finnish version is available in all good Helsinki bookshops from December.
