Well Done Dave! Great piccies. The snaps of a John Huggins in full flight are priceless and long overdue. Also nice to see Mrs Ruth Davies in club colours and back on the country. Hopefully it's the first of many more. Well done to all those who took part and supported the Regional Champs. Posted by: Simon at November 1, 2004 11:03 AM
Makes one ask the question "Why weren't you out there Dave?" Posted by: Matt at November 1, 2004 11:15 AM
I've got a dodgy back, Matt. And I did so badly last year, that I never want to run there again. Posted by: Dave at November 1, 2004 01:12 PM
I know the feeling Dave, it's demoralising getting lapped, and the smell of sewerage at the start didn't even get me running quicker. Mick's comment "watch you don't sink" was also particularly inspiring and that was in the warm up!! I've decided I'm not built for floating over mud but will persist as I can only improve, and if I cut the 8 beers the night before it might help. You won't belive this but I don't look as bad in the pic as I felt ie that someone sneaked in lead weights to my thighs. Posted by: Ian Derrick at November 1, 2004 01:30 PM
Your excellent photos certainly reflect the toughness of the event. Posted by: clare johnson at November 1, 2004 01:33 PM
Tough is relative : 2 days, thigh high rivers, knee deep marshes, 67 kilometres, backpack, taking 18 hours to do it; some of it in the pitch dark. Right then add on top of that Bill Fear for company! Posted by: Matt at November 1, 2004 04:04 PM
The coarse is flat. Whats tough about that? Now Snowdonia marathon there's a couple of hills for you. There must be something wrong with my computer 'cos i think these photo's are auful Posted by: ALAN MANN at November 1, 2004 07:20 PM
Alan - I know why you escaped to the tarmac roads of Snowdonia - to save you getting your multi-coloured socks dirty! And well done to everyone who took part in the amazing array of events this weekend, all of which were damned hard work I'm sure, in particular the KIMM entrants. Well done for all the photos, Dave - they are great. Posted by: David Coles at November 1, 2004 08:06 PM
Congratulations to Dave! I think we ought to have a competition "Face of the Race". Peter Kellam's pretty close. Kelvin Sullivan and John Huggins are making are a strong impression for two members who've been away far too long - great to see you back lads. But the winner, by a grimace, is Bridgend's Gareth Davies. Dave Walsh once nicknamed him "The Beast". I can see why!! Posted by: Mick at November 1, 2004 11:36 PM
The comments about the KIMM and Snowdonia? Tough is what you make it. After completing several KIMMs, 100km Mountain bike races, Irish Long course Triathlon champs, Snowdon Mountain Triathlon etc. I still regard a 5k Welsh league track race at Newport as amongst the hardest races I've competed in. There was no hiding place, elbows constantly thrust into your ribs, oxygen debt of the highest order and you're permanently on display! You enjoy (endure?) differnt types of effort in different events. Well done to Clare on her recent Welsh selection and well done to all the KIMM, Snowdonia and X-country competitors. Posted by: Simon at November 2, 2004 12:09 PM
Simon - You're completely right, last year's KIMM seemed a much tougher effort than this year although we were out for much longer. Aberdare's Gwent a couple of seasons ago was a swine and I still get a shiver seeing the sign for Dare Country Park. As for the speedier, shorter, harder road races: gut wrenching, brain clouding, vision blurring efforts where you pray for the finish line to appear. Makes you wonder, why the hell do we do it, masochism or something kinkier? Posted by: Matt at November 2, 2004 01:49 PM
Um, masochism or something kinkier, eh? Matt, when I asked for contributions for ACE on the subject of superstitions, hang-ups and fetishes you were strangely quiet. Anything you wish to divulge now? (and, as Kenny Everett once said, all in the best possible taste) Posted by: mick at November 2, 2004 04:49 PM
The pictures are exellent.Seeing the agony on so many faces is quite reassuring;I thought I was the only one suffering! Posted by: dave h at November 4, 2004 07:36 PM
Thanks Dave. Mike Davies Posted by: Mike Davies at November 4, 2004 09:59 PM
