Gary Hyatt: Ultra Hero to Track Sensation

July 14, 2004

What's the secret, "Top Man?" Members may recall that two weeks ago Gary completed his first 100km., clocking 10:16:36 and placing 19th in the Anglo Celtic Plate at Bute Park. You'd think he'd need a rest? Think again!

Last Sunday was the Welsh Masters Track and Field Champs. at Leckwith. Gary took gold in the 100 metres (M55), gold in the 400 metres, and silver in the 200 metres. What next?

Another newcomer to the world of track and field is Gary John. He also had a busy day, securing gold in the 800 metres (M50), silver in the 1500 metres and silver in the 5000 metres. A very difficult combination.

Great to see Rob Evans return to the fray. One of the club's founder members, Rob improved his season's best by 12 seconds to take gold in the M50 1500 metres.

The day after his 45th birthday, Nigel Webb front ran the 800 metres, eventually taking silver, whilst Mick McGeoch also took silver in the M45 1500 metres. Well done everyone!! Let's see more of the same for the remainder of the track season.

Mick - I don't think there is a secret except that in my age group I find that being alive and getting to the start line is a definite advantage. Then if you manage to finish that's a bonus and there seems to be a medal available if its a Welsh championship. I get all my supplements from the Friday evening tour of the Park (Hotel), Borough Arms and Eze Bar sampling the Guinness + the Athena for pie and chips on the way home. Gary. Gary, having personally sampled all the establishments that you mention I now more fully understand the reasons behind your success. I've been telling the rest of the club for years that "Barry is the centre of the universe" so I must thank you for reinforcing my theories. Posted by: mick at July 16, 2004 02:37 PM
Hay Mick you keep on about the sea air & the Barry quiz. dellak, sod it grub i think you shoukd put someome up for a year to see if they improve, now who can we use as a test subject!!! AAHHH got it FLASH Posted by: ALAN MANN at July 19, 2004 10:25 AM
We're very choosy about who we allow into Barry! No Cardiff riff-raff here, thank you! And I don't mean Flash personally, I mean ANY Cardiff riff-raff. If that doesn't provoke some banter, nothing will! Posted by: mick at July 19, 2004 12:22 PM
Hey Rob (Evans) - congratulations. I always knew you were older than me! Reflecting on the days in the Maindy pub after training with Colonel, Alexis, Denis (Gullidge)et al. Posted by: Phil Hexter at July 19, 2004 10:02 PM
Great to hear from you, Phil. Drop in and see us any Thursday. Yes, it's great to see "Rob the mint" back in circulation. And you know what? There's still more to come for the "babe magnet" (see Rob's personal profile on the member's page) from Highlight Park! For Alan Mann's benefit, yes that is in Barry! Where else?
