Now I know that at least one person followed the Flora 1000 Mile Challenge. Since I wrote about it, they've stopped updating the website. (I'll straighten my thoughts out about that in time.) In the meantime, I suspect that what went wrong was the lack of competition. Captain Barclay staked a lot of money on the race. In contrast, the six latterday entrants were paid £6 per mile. (Quite right for giving up that much of their time.) So there was no hunger, no urgency.
Prize money is riding on the first to cross the line in the London Marathon, so it may yet get exciting, or as Terry Caveney would say, almost interesting, at the last. But I think that like Tour de France sprinters refusing to be the first to break, they'll all hang back as long as possible. Expect them to finish after dark on the thirteenth.
So who's going to win it? Inside info suggests the ladies may make it a one:two. If you look at the website, mile splits for Miles 651-700 are detailed. It would appear that all five remaining athletes know they are now going to complete, and are jockeying for position.

John, I could have said on the Thirteenth of April, but as it's April now, it didn't seem necessary. However, I know you need a straight man. I didn't realise that you'd turned into Bob Hope. Is this why you're at home on a Thursday evening instead of heckling Mick?
When you talk about who is first across the finishing line, do you mean between them — or between you, Phil, Dave Williams, and Barry?

What about the other 5 holes that thay have to play? Will they play them on the next day then Dave? or will they play night time golf? We all know there is 18 not 13 holes in a round of golf. Interesting you make Terry sound like the great Steve 'Boring' Davis (no offence Terry). It will be interesting to see who is first across the finishing line in London.

Dave, I thought you said this website was boring. Look again - it's suddenly all got nasty!
