Because running isn’t a spectator sport.

In the Chicago Marathon, Paula Radcliffe ran faster than Mick's best time. On Sunday, in Peurto Rico, she broke the 10k world record. As Paula is still slower than Mick was over 10k, maybe she is suited to going further than the marathon, although she should be allowed to get her Olympic plans out of the way before she gets her Barry 40 invitation.
Mick's 2:17 clocking in 1984 led to him being chosen as a pacemaker for Ingrid Kristiansen in 1985. It couldn't happen now because as David Bedford in a Runner's World interview said People would not accept on the track a women's world record if she ran in a race with men around her finishing in sixth or seventh place. And all of a sudden you come to the marathon and people say that's OK?
Good question Dave, but it looks like they are going to say it's OK. Organisers of the Flora London Marathon are considering introducing a mixed race for the elite field so that male pacemakers can help Radcliffe to break the world record of 2hr 17min 18sec that she set in Chicago in October. (The Times, February 25, 2003.)
As you have always said Mick "YOUR ONLY AS GOOD AS YOUR LAST RACE",and as i can remember, you, myself ran 2.36 Phil if i can read the calender proply 3 hour something. We will have to ask the fairy that past him, and Paula ran 2.17, thats a hell of a long way, that about 3 miles plus.Mind you if she was around when you ran your 2.17 she could have paced you round, but looking at it could you have kept up with her???? Myself and Mr Blobby would`nt have had a hope in hell of seeing you both finish the race but only on the high lights.

Mick,Phil and Dave
Paula is quicker than all of us at the moment as she is running these times in the present 'DAY'
and not in the past where most of us are all dreaming about. All credit given you all ran good times but it's present form that counts as its no good dwelling on what WAS.

Dave, you're being uncommonly nice to me. Firstly, I ran my 2:17 in 1983, making me even further past my best than you suggest.
Also, as Phil states, Paula has now wiped out all my PBs:
Marathon: 2:17:18 to my 2:17:58
3000M: 8:22 to my 8:23
5000M: 14:31 to my 14:38
10K Road: 30:21 to my 30:31
10K Track: 30:01 to my 30:48
But the proximity of our times gives a clue as to what times she might achieve at other events.
For example, Catherine Ndereba's World Best for 10 Miles is 50:54. I ran 49:18 in Woking in 1987, which would suggest a 49 minute clocking well within Paula's range.
I would similarly expect her to be able to run close to 65 minutes for a Half Marathon in good conditions (current record 66:40ish)
In my early 30s I managed to run sub 4 mins for 1500 metres after a period of training with a young, lean David Bright (himself a 3:54 man). Paula's best is "only" 4:05 which she should be able to revise by quite a bit - possibly making her No: 1 in the UK at that event also. I wonder what Kelly Holmes' excuse would be then?
It'll be very interesting to see if Paula tries to beat her own World Best in London. She clearly is capable of it but the conditions (which have been very favourable for both her previous marathons)will have to be conducive.

How nice it is to see Phil Cook regaining his self-confidence. In the last month he's beaten me at Blaise Castle, Wokingham, Welsh CC at Bridgend and now he's beaten me to make comments on the website.
And not before time, considering he spent most of last year wobbling round courses resembling Mister Blobby. Phil, if you're still seeing me as someone worth beating:
1. I feel very flattered.
2. You're setting your sights too low.
Having said that, at least he's still been competing, which is more than can be said for some.......

Just noticed what I had put down for my 10K PB, it should be 30:30 - ONE second quicker than Mick.

Actually Dave, Paula is quicker than Mick over 10K. Mick's PB for 10k on the Road is 30:31, and mine is 31:30, so she is quicker than both of us. Also I don't recall Mick having broken 30:00 on the Track so I think she is quicker there as well. But I'm sure he'll have some reply to this.

John, I notice that your latest entry was written just before 9PM on a Thursday. I suppose I ought to be grateful that you're now writing about me on the website, rather than interrupting the announcements. It's very quiet in club these days, especially as Huggy hasn't been in recently either.
By the way, ask Eryl to show you how to use the Spell-Check!!
