I noted on the calendar that the AAW listing for the Welsh Cross-Country Championships was a 'closely guarded secret' but Mick has been good enough to ring them (what is a website for if not to cut down on trivial administrative tasks?) and he reports that the important stuff comes down to this: Ladies start 1:50pm; distance 5.850k. Fellas start 3pm; distance 11.6k. It doesn't seem to have occurred to the organisers that declaring the time in advance might be useful. I've been to lots of races where John Huggins worked a shift in the morning and couldn't have made an earlier start than two in the afternoon. But convenience for the participants never seems to be a priority of the governing bodies of our sport.
Our vet 40 men progressed to head the points table (helped by Dave Miller's stunning debut performance) in Blaise Castle last week. Captain's bottles of wine went to Carol Miller, for her strong performance, and John Plain, who was a non-runner a year ago.
