I pulled a calf muscle whilst training on UWIC last night. I've been running for 36 years now and that's never happened to me before. After the initial thoughts of frustration as to an enforced spell of no training / racing, inevitably my thoughts turn to "Why?"
What can I learn from this? Is my body simply telling me I'm getting old? As I was on the final interval of a set of 6 x 800 (200 jog recovery) after having run 19 miles on Sunday morning (2 days ago) had I simply given myself insufficient recovery.
All significant factors. However, the most significant one, I believe, is the banked nature of UWIC's track. Just recently, we've had some very cold weather and being able to do a quality session in such nice surroundings has been great. My training partners, Phil and Simon have both indicated that they prefer training at UWIC than Leckwith for very understandable reasons. The track and stadium temperature also enables you train that much faster (a benefit but with inherent risks).Prior to last night I'd indicated an intention to train at UWIC every week (at least during the winter).
Not now. The experience has scared me sufficiently into deciding to reverting to train outdoors, whatever the weather. Training decisions are inevitably about risks versus benefits. Leckwith may be cold, it may be wet, it may be a wind tunnel, but on balance I believe it a safer option. I'll be back there when the calf heals. Safety must be the first option.
Peter,
I think I will follow your advice, starting tonight.

Simon, get some of the black stuff down you quick to replace those electrolytes.
Mick - Leckwith was lovely, cold and windy tonight and I had a damn good session. Having hid indoors last week aginst last Wednesday's weather, I would agree with you that the Leckwith track requires a degree of caution, especially if you are cranking out a few k's at pace. Whilst few of us in Les Croups are likely to hit warp speed in a sesh, there's still a fair few new strains in negotiating a tight banked track. Maybe this was Mother Nature getting back at you - all those year's of running outside and then a brief fling with her indoors!

I was hoping it was just cramp that forced you to pull up! What a pity. I still feel that dehydration may have also played a part, my calf is similarly sore today, which I feel may have been influenced by excessive sweating and loss of electrolytes.
Anyway, if you'd like to go back to Leckwith I'll join you back at the windtunnel, and here's to a speedy recovery.
