[Previous entry: London Marathon Draw] [Current Ace] [Next entry: Blaise to glory]
Alan Thomas, who subscribes to Runners's World, has written to me to express his displeasure at their choice of 100 best races of 2002 or some such thing. He tells me that the list includes the Swansea Bay 10k, which is flat and and attracts the best runners in the country (it is also allegedly fast — though the course record is still a minute slower than Haile Gebreselaisse's World Best), Race the Train (possibly my favourite race ever), and the ever-popular Lake Vrynwy Half. Those races are not the source of his complaint. They and the 97 others have much to recommend them.
Alan was put out that they managed to forget the Welsh Castles Relay. Of course, many of you will know that Alan has an interest in the race as he is the entry co-ordinator. He can always have his revenge. Steve Smythe, the editor, runs for Dulwich AC. Al could always quietly lose their 2003 entry, should they apply.
But Al isn't a vindictive bloke, even if his feeling are temporarily hurt. He's just all the more determined to make the Top 100 for 2003. Steve Smythe had better prepare himself for a charm offensive…
Simon's got it right. And I won't be getting cold and wet shouting encouragement to the women who turn out for the Fireworks 5 unless it's at least number 20.

I'm amazed, no father time 5 included in the top 100 races either. That's the last time I stand on a windswept course pointing wrinklies the right way. I won't get out of bed to marshall a race unless it's in the top 100.

Richie, Woody had you sussed. You really are the supreme Devil's Advocate. Would you not agree with me that as the athletes on the Barry 40 have never gone off course, then inevitably the 40 must rank above the Castles in any Race survey? Of course!
Fill in an entry form for next year (Sunday 7th March, 2004, provisionally) and I'll see to it that you go the right way. Who knows, Alan Thomas might even fill in your lap chart!

...mmm, of course the top 100 probably all sent their runners over the correct course for the final 5% of the distance - not like some races that were held in 2002. So no complaints !!

Barry 40 isn't in there either.Oh well there's no accounting for taste. Alan and I both know that the 40 and the Castles are the Number 1 and 2 events in the world (I won't say which is which 'cos I don't want to start World War 3).

A little research was all that was needed. Steve Smythe (editor of RW) placed 7th on Stage 3 Criccieth - Maentwrog last year, and a certain Dave Williams placed third. If you'd just experienced such a trauma, would you broadcast it to the nation? Neither would I.
