Robin Hood Cancelled

The Robin Hood Marathon, which has given more than £1m to the poor, has been declared dead by the sheriffs of Nottingham.

The full sorry tale.

London Calling

When Pinto and Mouaziz set out to lower the course record, Ace will set out to lower the tone.

A swift update on events.

Another Junior Member

Frank & Berit Moritz, late of this parish, now domiciled near Geneva, are expecting their first born in August. We’re told that Berit is feeling sick already. Already? She’s been living with him for years!

Rob Jones is getting married in August. He’s not really one of us, but like Paul Bennett he might as well be. The engagement was announced during the Sunday run from the rowing club, and Rob hadn’t backed out by Wednesday. This page takes that as a firm commitment, but then he’s not Dave Williams. Barry Johnston, with the experience of years of marriage, gave him heartfelt advice.

"Don’t do it, mate."

Horses might fly before the doughty Pegasus runner goes back on his decision.

Good News - No News

Other than those happy tidings, we have little else to report.

The Barry 40 is now full. So is the Bath Half Marathon, which we hope won’t stop Ceri Donovan filling her bus trip to the event.

Andy Cleves’ perparation for the Marathon de Sables seems to be going well. He’s been going for tramps in the Brecon Beacons with Dave Price, Simon Nurse and Geran Hughes.

The tramps all got away.

I’m off to think of more rubbish to sully cyber space with.

Christmas Competition

No one bothered to enter, so I get to keep the prize, being the bottle of wine I couldn’t open and left at Claire Johnson’s at Sandra Caveney’s birthday party.

So, A New Competition

Another competition, again involving Kevin.

In the unlikely event of anyone entering, and the unlikelier event of a tie, here’s a tie-breaker. Now, using your skill and cunning, write a sentence of 20 words or fewer using at least three of the above words as Kevin would use them.

The prize is probably that same bottle of wine.

A selection of your letters

A real one, from Ramiro Anzola

Hi, mates!

Browsing through the Internet on running websites, I came up coincidentally yet happily with Les Croupiers Running Club website. Good old memories popped up in my mind instantly; you cannot imagine how pleased I was seeing many known faces.

I was a Croup myself in 1993/1994 while in Cardiff studying a Master’s degree at University of Wales Cardiff. I joined after reading at college an ad placed by Jeff Wood (I was shocked to learn he is not with us any more) and then getting contacted by John Plain (couldn’t find him as member; did he quit?). People, specially John, gave me a great welcome. I am still fond of my Croup memories, races, trips, the pub, its grub, but above all people, friends: John Plain, Jeff Wood, Jeff Aston, Anne Donald (from whom we received a Xmas letter back in 1994), Ruth Coleshaw, Dave Roberts, Veronica Singleton, John Diamond, Richie and Yvonne Bullen, Mel James, Mick McGeogh, ... Sorry for those I omitted; it has been over six years now since then! Is it possible at all to get an update of what happened to them all?

I have been quite active running-wise over the years. Upon completing my MSc, I returned to my home country (Colombia) until 1997 when my former employer relocated me to Mexico City, where I am living presently. In Colombia there are not much races, even less running clubs. In Mexico there are races almost every weekend, but still you do not have here the kind of social club as Les Croups, reason for which I ought running by myself.

I used to run races with my beloved Les Croups vest until 1998 when it mysteriously "disappeared". Maybe the washing machine "ate" it!!!??? I do miss it.

Anyhow I run here from 5K to marathons (ran 1998 Cancun marathon aiming to break my London’s 3:20 while living in Cardiff; disappointingly I paid humidity and heat’s token and could only repeat the same time), but the events I like most are 10K and half marathon.

In 1998 I ran a 10K in San Antonio, Texas, where was able to achieve a PB 37:47, but have not been able to get any close to 1993 Cardiff’s 1:26 for 21K. Last May 28th I turned 40; this might be the reason. As with Richie, nobody believes my age. Nobody bothers though, as my times are still quite far from achieving prize-money positions.

Well, I do hope that I can keep in touch with many of you and with Les Croups activities. I’m eager and planning to travel to Cardiff soonest possible, and will be more than glad to see most of you and why not, enjoy a Thursday evening with Les Croups. In case that any of you are able and willing to come to Mexico, I will certainly be glad to offer you a couch at home and show you around town.

Looking forward to hear from you.

A Museum Anecdote

Richard Brewer, ultra runner and Roman archaeologist, denied stories that any reportage in the online Ace dated from Roman times.

"The Romans were civilised!" he snorted, "Anyway, most of it is so much older that it can’t be carbon dated. Our science curators speculate that some it may have arrived by meteorites from Mars when the solar system was still young."

So there we have it: proof there was never intelligent life on Mars.

Get Rich Quick

Send me only £100 (cash and postal orders only - no cheques) and I will tell you how to place an advertisment and receive £100 (or sum of your choosing) from every mug person who replies!!!

Unrepeatable offer! (Well until the next time.)

Cross Country Files

A gratuitous pic of Tara Krzywicki

The fourth Gwent of the 2000/2001 season saw Jeff Aston’s 100th successive run in the league, marked by an impressive 119th place. That’s 20 years (and a bit - one season only had four fixtures due to weather) of non-stop competition. Will anyone ever beat this? I’m inclined to think that it’s no coincidence that Jeff’s running his 21st London after 20 years of cross-country, and our whole club’s consistency in both events is more than chance too.

Despite our commitment to the country, no one from Croups followed Nicky Comerford’s eighth place in the inter-counties in Nottingham on the 11th. Can South Wales really be so deep in talent that none of us (like Julian or Richie or Wendy) was asked?
